Stop hunger now?

At our Conference, we will join the movement 'Stop hunger now!'. It is a worthy place to participate.

Yet, I wonder as I stand in a breakfast queue for Conference delegates and Bishops... This is what I saw on more than one plate, most of the plates, in fact:
1 fried egg
3 strips of bacon
2 sausages
4 pieces of cheese
Baked beans
A muffin
3 slices of bread
A selection of cold meat
A hashbrown
Fishcakes
And a bowl of fruit and yogurt.

As the delegates balanced their plates to the tables, I wondered where they were going to pack it all. Most of all, I wondered with how much integrity we will pack food parcels tonight.

I have to be careful what I...

However, I am quite shocked by the general size of our clergy! We have very few ministers who skip a meal!

My 1 year, 1 meal a day, fast (which I have been doing for the past 5 months) arose out of a recognition that I love to eat, and that there are many in our nation who also love to eat but do not have the joy of doing so. I was reading Isaiah 58 around the time that I decided to embark on this discipline.

It is not for everyone - it is far more a judgment on my appetites than the appetites of others. I wanted to do something about it and particularly to understand how the majority of South Africans feel each day going about their tasks and daily activities with an empty stomach. It is not comfortable, but it has given me some sense of compassion.

Just a few thoughts.

I pray for our leaders and for the Conference of our Church.
