6 August

On this day in 1945, the Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. About 80 000 people lost their lives that day, with thousands more dying since then from radiation-sickness.

The irony is that we live in a world which still strives after nuclear-weapon capability.

And as usual, the ones shouting the loudest about stopping the development of nuclear weapons have the biggest arsenals themselves.

I visited Ejit Island, where the Bikini Islanders were relocated. I waded across a large reef to get there -- and back. I grew up in Kiribati, where the H-bomb was tested on Kiritimati. I spoke to people who were affected -- including a woman who, as a little girl, saw the flash on the horizon. She had had many operations for tumors. I was deeply disturbed by the massive effects of those bombs, in the Marshalls and in Kiribati. I had never understood the vast impact that they had. One doesn't seem to appreciate that from "the West".
